Fortune magazine, Sunday Times of London, recognize General Mills
6 March 2009
Two respected publications – Fortune magazine and the Sunday Times of London – recently recognized General Mills for its global reputation and workplace culture, respectively.
World’s Most Admired Companies Fortune magazine this week named General Mills to its first ranking of the top 50 “World’s Most Admired Companies,” which has replaced its earlier ranking of “America’s Most Admired Companies.”
General Mills ranked No. 45, and was selected from an initial pool of some 1,400 global companies.
“With the interlinked nature of the world economy painfully clear, it no longer made sense to generate separate lists of American and global companies,” said Fortune in announcing the rankings in its March 2 edition. “We've expanded this new directory beyond our previous global list to create the most comprehensive worldwide reputation ranking anywhere.”
The magazine noted that faring well in the rankings is especially noteworthy this year because trust in business has fallen even below the level found after the Enron bankruptcy scandal in 2001.
“Any company that can perform well and maintain its good name during the worst recession in 75 years is arguably more admirable than the best performer during boom times,” said the magazine.
UK: 100 Best Companies to to work for In the United Kingdom, General Mills UK has been named one of the Sunday Times “100 Best Companies to Work For” for the second year in a row and third time overall.
General Mills UK ranked No. 88 and was the only food manufacturing company to make the list.
“Making it onto the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list shows how our success can be put down to how we concentrate on our people – we help and inspire them to achieve ever better goals, both personally and professionally,” says General Mills UK Managing Director Jim Moseley.
“We are committed to being a great employer, and this result reflects the reputation we have for bringing careers to life.”
General Mills UK also was named to the Financial Times 50 Great Places to Work in 2006 and 2008, and to the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2006.
In selecting the top 100 companies, the Sunday Times considered the following eight criteria that make for a healthy workplace: leadership, well-being, my manager, my team, fair deal, giving something back, my company and personal growth.
The company’s increasingly global reputation is in line with its long-term strategy to attract and develop talent in the many different countries in which it operates.
“This global recognition of the great workplace culture will help General Mills build an even stronger, more competitive company,” says Mike Davis, senior vice president of Global Human Resources. “We’re honored to be recognized by Fortune and proud of what our team in the UK has accomplished.”
